The Best Adventure Tours in Indonesia: Trekking, Diving and Boats

The best adventure tours in Indonesia are not the ones with the longest itinerary. They are the ones where the effort actually buys you something: a crater rim at dawn, a reef with no other boat on it, a whale shark surfacing an arm's length away. This is what we run and how we would choose between them, with the permits, caps and closures that decide your dates written in rather than left as a surprise at the airport.

Almost all of what we run sits east of Bali, plus one morning inland from Ubud. Bali is where you land; Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores and Sulawesi are where most of the adventure travel in Indonesia happens, with Java's volcanoes and Sumatra's jungle as the big exceptions. On Flores, Kelimutu's three crater lakes are a 20 to 30 minute paved walk in the early morning.

Trekking: volcanoes, and one village you walk to

The serious walk is Rinjani, Indonesia's second-highest volcano, a two or three day climb to the crater rim and, for the determined, the summit above a turquoise crater lake. Two rules to build a trip around. The mountain closes every year from 1 January to 31 March for weather and recovery, reopening on 1 April. Permits are sold only through the eRinjani system, which issues a QR ticket checked at the gate, and since March 2026 trekking insurance is checked at registration rather than assumed. Tickets run IDR 250,000 (about $14) per person per day on the Class 1 routes, Sembalun, Senaru and Torean.

Rinjani's summit push is the most dangerous walk on this page: in June 2025 a Brazilian hiker died after falling about 600 metres near the summit. Go with a licensed guide, and turn round if the ridge is in cloud.

If a multi-day climb is not the trip you want, the walk to Wae Rebo is two to three hours uphill through forest to a village of seven cone-roofed houses, usually done as an overnight stay. Java's volcanoes and Sumatra's jungle

Bromo is the easy volcano: a jeep before dawn to the Penanjakan viewpoint and a short climb to the crater rim, with a foreign ticket of IDR 255,000 (about $14) booked online through the park's booking system. Our guide to Bromo sunrise and jeep costs has the rest.

Ijen is a night hike of about 3 km uphill, 1.5 to 2 hours for most people, to a sulphur crater. Since a 2024 earthquake the crater floor is off limits, so the blue fire is viewed from the rim; our Ijen crater night hike guide covers the timing and the gas mask.

For orangutans, Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra is a guided jungle trek on the edge of Gunung Leuser National Park, covered in our page on orangutan treks at Bukit Lawang. We do not run Bromo, Ijen or Bukit Lawang trips ourselves yet.

Diving and snorkelling: three very different trips

Komodo is the one most people mean by an Indonesian diving tour. Currents, manta cleaning stations, and the Padar ridge at first light. You can do it in a day from Labuan Bajo on our speedboat day trip from $81, or properly on a three day two night liveaboard from $336 per person, waking up already moored at the next site. Groups who would rather not share take the whole phinisi from $2,520 for the boat, up to five guests, rather than per head.

Sulawesi is the quiet alternative. Three days of island hopping in the Banggai Islands is from $252 per person for a group of four, and the six-day Luwuk and Gorontalo trip from $420 adds whale sharks, lakes and caves. Raja Ampat is the far end of both the map and the budget, and worth its own planning rather than a line here.

Water without a tank: whale sharks, mantas and surf

You do not need a certification for the best of it. In Saleh Bay off Sumbawa, snorkelling with whale sharks starts at IDR 800,000 (about $45) per person, which remains the most memorable thing on this list for the money. The permits and caps that decide your dates

This is the part that catches people, and it has changed recently in two of the three places above.

Komodo has capped entry at 1,000 visitors a day since 1 April 2026, piloted from January of that year, and permits are sold only through the official SiOra system. Walk-ins are gone and popular dates go early. The foreign entry ticket is IDR 250,000 (about $14) per person per day under Government Regulation 36 of 2024, the same every day of the week, and it already includes trekking and snorkelling. Diving adds IDR 25,000 a day, the harbour IDR 25,000, and the ranger fee for the dragon walks is about IDR 200,000 per group of up to five. Our Komodo park fees guide has the full table.

Raja Ampat needs two permits from two different bodies. The marine park card, sometimes called the PIN or environmental services card, is IDR 1,000,000 (about $56) for foreign visitors, valid twelve months from purchase, with under-12s exempt. On top of that sits the regency's SIPARI visitor levy, a further IDR 1,000,000, so since 3 August 2026 a foreign visitor pays IDR 2,000,000 (about $112) in total, registered and paid online before arrival. Rinjani also closes at short notice inside the dry season. From 1 September 2026 the park restricted access because of forest-fire risk and stopped taking new eRinjani bookings, with no reopening date announced as of 24 September; treks paid before that date are still honoured. When to go

Most of this runs on the same calendar. April to October is the dry season across Lombok, Sumbawa, Flores and most of Sulawesi: calmer crossings, clearer water, passable mountain roads. July and August are the busiest and priciest weeks of that window, and the shoulders on either side are usually the better trade.

Two exceptions are worth planning around. Raja Ampat runs on the opposite cycle, at its best from October to April, which is exactly when Komodo's seas are roughest, so a December trip should point east rather than at Labuan Bajo. And Rinjani is shut from 1 January to 31 March whatever the weather is doing, so a February trip to Lombok is a beach trip, not a trekking one. How to choose between Indonesia adventure tours

Pick by what you want to have done, not by what covers the most ground. If you want one hard thing you will remember, Rinjani in the dry season, once new bookings reopen. If you want the water, Komodo for drama and Sulawesi for emptiness. If you have a long weekend rather than a fortnight, Nusa Penida or the Sumbawa whale sharks. If you are travelling with people of mixed appetite, a private charter solves more arguments than any itinerary.
