How to Go to Raja Ampat from Singapore: the honest guide

How to go to Raja Ampat from Singapore: fly via Jakarta or Makassar to Sorong, then a two to three hour ferry to Waisai. Times, costs and the permits.

How to go to Raja Ampat from Singapore, in short: there is no direct flight. Plan on 17 to 21 hours from Changi to Sorong via Jakarta or Makassar, plus a two to three hour ferry to Waisai; Raja Ampat is about 3,000 km east of Singapore and one hour ahead. You fly Singapore to Jakarta or Makassar, take an overnight domestic flight on to Sorong in Southwest Papua, then cross to the island town of Waisai by ferry, and almost everyone sleeps either on the plane or in a hotel somewhere along the way. Budget a week if you can. Anything under five days and the travelling eats the holiday.

Singapore to Sorong: the flights, leg by leg

There is no direct Singapore to Sorong flight, so every routing connects in Jakarta or Makassar. Two routings do the job as of July 2026. Via Jakarta is what most people book, because the frequency is highest and the overnight flight to Sorong is a proper wide-cabin service. Via Makassar is usually cheaper and shorter in the air, but it leaves you with a long dead evening in a quiet terminal before a very early departure.

  • Singapore to Jakarta (CGK): under two hours, flown many times a day by several carriers including Singapore Airlines, Garuda Indonesia and Scoot.

  • Singapore to Makassar (UPG): about three hours nonstop. Scoot flies it direct, around four times a week as of July 2026.

  • Jakarta to Sorong (SOQ): about four hours ten minutes nonstop. Garuda Indonesia and Batik Air both run overnight departures, Garuda around 00:10 and Batik around midnight to 00:30, landing in Sorong roughly 06:00 to 06:40. Sorong runs on eastern Indonesian time, two hours ahead of Jakarta, so the clock jumps while you sleep.

  • Makassar to Sorong (SOQ): about two hours twenty minutes. Lion Air, Super Air Jet and Sriwijaya Air fly it, with the earliest departures listed from around 02:40 and arrivals before 06:00.

The overnight leg is the whole point of the design. You want wheels down in Sorong in the early morning, because that is what lets you reach Waisai the same day instead of losing another night. If your itinerary lands you in Sorong in the afternoon, accept it and book a hotel there rather than scrambling for the last boat.

Getting back to Singapore: plan a night in Sorong

The return does not mirror the outbound. Travellers who have done it consistently advise booking the flight out of Sorong for the day after the ferry, not the same day, because many westbound departures leave before the boat from Waisai gets in. A night in Sorong costs far less than a missed international connection, and it keeps your last island day unhurried.

Sorong to Waisai: the ferry into Raja Ampat

Domine Eduard Osok airport sits about 3.5 km from Sorong harbour, which is ten to twenty minutes in a taxi for roughly IDR 100,000 (about $6). Grab works in Sorong and is usually cheaper. The fast ferry crossing to Waisai takes about two hours in decent conditions and closer to three when there is swell in the strait.

Once you reach Waigeo, almost every onward move is by small boat.
  • Schedules genuinely disagree between sources. Older guides list 09:00 and 14:00 daily. A June 2026 update circulated by local operators has 14:00 only from Monday to Saturday, with an extra 09:00 sailing on Sunday, and no morning boat on national holidays. Check locally the day before rather than trusting any printed timetable, including this one.

  • There is still no online booking. Tickets are sold at the port on the day, so turn up 45 to 60 minutes early, more for the morning sailing.

  • Fares quoted in 2026 run around IDR 100,000 to 150,000 (about $6 to $8) for economy and IDR 250,000 (about $14) for VIP or business seating.

  • Miss the last ferry and your options are a night in Sorong or a private speedboat charter, which costs several million rupiah. The night in Sorong is the sane choice.

What it costs

  • Singapore to Makassar on Scoot: aggregator listings in July 2026 showed one way from about SGD 196 and return from about SGD 322 on direct flights.

  • Makassar to Sorong: one way listed from about IDR 1.45 million, roughly SGD 115, in July 2026. Peak dates run far above that.

  • Jakarta to Sorong: aggregators in July 2026 listed one way from roughly USD 150 upwards, again with a wide spread by date.

  • Airport taxi in Sorong: about IDR 100,000 (about $6). Ferry: IDR 100,000 to 250,000 (about $6 to $14) each way.

  • Park fees: at least IDR 1,000,000 (about $56) per person, and probably more. See the next section.

Add the legs together and transport alone from Singapore to Waisai and back lands somewhere in the region of SGD 600 to 1,100 per person, depending on how far ahead you book and whether you travel in the November to March peak. Operators quote a wide range on this route, so treat that as a bracket rather than a price, and price your own dates before you commit. Homestays, boats and food on top are in a full Raja Ampat budget breakdown.

The marine park permit, and the ticket nobody mentions

There are two separate government payments, and this is where people get caught. The first is the Marine Park Entry Permit, valid for twelve months from issue. For foreign passport holders it has been quoted in 2026 at both IDR 700,000 (about $39) and IDR 1,000,000 (about $56), and a new conservation-area tariff set in July 2026 was postponed by the regent on 24 August (Teropong News, 26 August 2026), so confirm the live price at kkprajaampat.com the week you fly and budget for the higher figure. Indonesian citizens pay a lower rate. You can pay it online at kkprajaampat.com before you fly, or in person at the park authority office in Waisai. Children under twelve are exempt.

  • The second payment is a Visitor Entry Ticket run by the regency tourism office through the SIPARI system, and sources disagree sharply on the amount. Some quote IDR 300,000 (about $17) for foreigners, others IDR 1,000,000 (about $55). Check sipari-rajaampat.id shortly before you travel and budget for the higher figure so a surprise at the counter is a refund, not a problem.

  • Pay the marine park permit online in advance if you can, and keep the receipt or card on you. Rangers do check.

  • Village and site fees are separate again. Small landing charges of a few tens of thousands of rupiah are normal at places like Piaynemo, and boats going to Wayag have been charged around IDR 1,000,000 (about $55) plus a guide fee.

  • Bring the cash. There is effectively one ATM in the whole regency, in Waisai, and it is not something to build a plan around.

When to go

October to April is the settled window, and November to March is when visibility is best and mantas are most reliably around. July and August are the windiest months, with a rough Dampier Strait and enough weather that some liveaboards simply stop running. That does not make the middle of the year unusable, and you will have the place far more to yourself, but boat days get cancelled and small-boat crossings stop being fun. Water temperature stays warm all year and rain can arrive in any month. The month-by-month picture is in our guide to the best time to visit Raja Ampat.

Weather moves through fast. A grey morning is not a cancelled day, but a windy one often is.

What to do when you land

Waisai is a working town rather than the reason you came. Most people move straight on to a homestay on Kri, Gam or the south coast of Waigeo, or join a liveaboard. From a base near the Dampier Strait the standard days out are the Piaynemo lookout and its star-shaped lagoon, the reef under the Arborek jetty, the Pasir Timbul sandbar that appears and disappears with the tide, and the drop-off at Friwen Wall. Wayag, the one in every photograph, is a long way north and is either an expensive full day or an overnight, so decide early whether you want it enough. To put the days in order, follow a 7 day Raja Ampat itinerary.

Practical notes

  • Singapore and Malaysian passport holders enter Indonesia visa free for 30 days as ASEAN nationals. That stay cannot be extended or converted, so plan the exit before you arrive.

  • Your passport needs at least six months validity, and immigration can ask to see an onward or return ticket.

  • Everyone must submit the free All Indonesia arrival card online within 72 hours before landing, at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the All Indonesia app. It replaced the old customs and health forms. It is not a visa and does not by itself grant entry.

  • Telkomsel is the only mobile network that works with any consistency out in the islands. Buy a SIM at Sorong airport and ask for national data, because some starter packs only work in Java and Bali. Even with full bars, expect the connection to drop.

  • Bring rupiah in cash. Nearly all homestays are cash only, and many run their electricity on a generator for only part of the day.

  • If your legs are on separate tickets, and on the Scoot plus Lion Air combination they will be, your bags are not checked through. You collect, clear, and check in again. Leave three hours or more at the connection, and do not book the tightest option you can find.

None of this is difficult, but all of it is long, and the single most common mistake is treating Raja Ampat as a short break. Give it a week, book the overnight flight rather than fighting it, and sort the permits before you go. Asik Travel runs trips here from Sorong, which mainly takes the ferry and permit choreography off your hands. Do it yourself or not, the advice is the same: more days than you think, and less rushing between islands.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a direct flight from Singapore to Raja Ampat?

No. Raja Ampat is reached through Sorong (SOQ) in Southwest Papua, and there is no direct service from Singapore. You connect in Jakarta or Makassar and take an overnight domestic flight on to Sorong.

How long does it take to go to Raja Ampat from Singapore?

Roughly a day. Aggregators in July 2026 quoted total journey times of about 17 hours via Jakarta and about 21 hours via Makassar, including the connection. Add a taxi and a two-hour ferry from Sorong to Waisai on top of that.

Can I fly into Sorong and reach Waisai the same day?

Usually yes, if you take an overnight flight that lands in the early morning. The airport is only ten to twenty minutes from the harbour. If you arrive in the afternoon you will most likely need to spend a night in Sorong.

How much is the Raja Ampat marine park permit in 2026?

The Marine Park Entry Permit is valid twelve months. Foreign passport holders have been quoted both IDR 700,000 and IDR 1,000,000 in 2026, and a new conservation-area tariff set in July 2026 was postponed by the regent on 24 August, so check kkprajaampat.com the week you fly and budget for IDR 1,000,000. Buy it online there or at the park office in Waisai. A separate Visitor Entry Ticket applies through the SIPARI system, and sources quote anywhere from IDR 300,000 to IDR 1,000,000 for foreigners, so verify at sipari-rajaampat.id before you travel.

Do Singaporeans and Malaysians need a visa for Indonesia?

No. As ASEAN nationals you enter visa free for 30 days, and that stay cannot be extended or converted. You still need six months passport validity, possibly an onward ticket, and the free All Indonesia arrival card submitted within 72 hours of landing.

What is the worst time of year to go?

July and August. They are the windiest months, the Dampier Strait gets rough, and some liveaboards suspend operations. October to April is the settled window, with November to March the best for visibility and manta sightings.

Do I need cash in Raja Ampat?

Yes, and plenty of it. There is effectively one ATM in the regency, in Waisai. Nearly all homestays take rupiah in cash only, and boat charters, village fees and ferry tickets are cash as well.
